Broward County bus passengers injured in serious Fort Lauderdale car accident

Eleven people were rushed to a hospital Monday morning after a car collided with a Broward County Transit bus in Wilton Manors, a small town lodged between Fort Lauderdale and Oakland Park. The accident, which occurred at about 7:30 a.m., happened near Powerline Road and Oakland Park Boulevard when a car slammed into the back of a Broward County bus stopped to allow passenger onto the bus. The bus was carrying 27 passengers at the time of the accident. Eleven of the passengers were taken to area hospitals by ambulance. Three of those passengers were admitted to the hospital for what is being termed “serious” injuries. The remaining 16 passengers were all treated at the scene for injuries.

It appears the person with the most severe injuries from the car-bus accident was the driver of the car, a 39 year old woman. The woman was trapped in the car after the impact, and was only freed from the wreckage after fire departments from four different cities arrived on scene. It appeared the woman suffered injuries to her legs and pelvis.

Although a Florida Traffic Crash Report has not been released from the accident yet, police investigators on scene says it does not appear the woman’s car braked before slamming into the rear end of the bus. One of the investigators said there were no skid marks in the area of the crash. Because of the number of people involved in the accident, and the multiple police and fire departments that responded to the accident, the crash report may not be completed for more than five to seven days. Fire Rescue departments from Fort LauderdaleOakland ParkPompano Beach and Broward Sheriffs Office responded to the car bus accident.

Maryland accident attorney Why do you need the services of one?

Accidents are unpredictable and there is no telling how much loss the victim may incur or the type of injuries that may be sustained. Unfortunately the accident rate in the US is quite high owing to drunk and reckless drivers. Although these people wreak havoc on the lives of other drivers or even pedestrians, you cannot expect them to take responsibility for their actions on their own. This is where a good Maryland accident attorney will come to your rescue.

If you have sustained injuries in an auto accident or while crossing the street because of a distracted driver, the first step of dealing with such as untowardly incident, is to get in touch with an experienced Maryland accident attorney.

A lot of people incorrectly assume that they will be able to represent themselves or fight on their own in such cases. However, to their utter chagrin they discover that their opponent has harbored no such fallacies and has come prepared to the court with a professional in tow, where does this leave the complainant?

Even if you have a strong case on your hands, unless you can represent it with the finesse that a legal setting calls for, you may not be able to help yourself. Add to this the fact, that whether you have the plaintiff fighting against you or perhaps an insurance company, they will try their hardest to not give you a penny.

Then, there is also another scenario to consider where you opponent may want to settle out of court. However, you may not be the best person to negotiate. As a matter of fact, a lot of people are intimidated into accepting a settlement that is far lower than what the court would have awarded them.

When you enlist the help of an experienced Maryland accident attorney, he/she will be capable of fighting the case against the opponent’s lawyer. You will find that several accident attorneys have been specifically handling accident and injury/loss related matters for several years. So, they know precisely about the clauses that should be used to handle such cases.

Also, when your opponents see that you have a professional working on your behalf, they will be forced to offer you an appropriate settlement. Often in case of accidents, the victim not only has to incur financial losses due to vehicle damage and injury but also he/she leaves himself open to lawsuits from third parties whose property may be damaged as a result of the accident.

A professional Maryland accident attorney will be able to analyze all facets of the incident carefully and ask for a settlement based on all of these. He will also be able to get injuries sustained by the other passengers in your vehicle into the conundrum.

An accident attorney will be able to help you out in the following cases:

If you were involved in a vehicular rear ended accident
If you were in a head on collision with another vehicle and your automobile was damaged or you sustained physical injuries.
You were hit by an inebriated driver
You were struck as a pedestrian when crossing the road.
You sustained injuries because of the reckless driving of a semi-truck driver
A passenger traveling in your vehicle was killed as a result of the accident.

A Maryland accident attorney will also be able to help you to get your insurance dues faster. So, if you have recently been in an accident; regardless of how small or big it was, your best bet is to approach the office of an accident attorney and protect your interests.

During your history with auto insurance companies, you should know by now that the style of automobile that you drive makes a huge difference in your insurance premiums. If you drive a sports car, which is usually fast and small, you know right off the bat that your insurance rates may be extremely higher than your neighbor’s insurance premiums are on his sedan or station wagon style of vehicle. Probably the most highly auto to insure is the “convertible” whether it be small, medium or a larger size vehicle.

This practice by almost all insurance companies does not go without reason or logic on the part of the insurance company even though it may not seem fair to the drivers of convertibles.

As you know, you become a liability to your insurance company when any damage is done to your vehicle or any bodily injury happens to you or your passengers. As you can imagine, this can become quite costly to your insurance company. Statistics have always shown that drivers of small, fast, flashy cars are more prone to damage their vehicles and cause injuries to their passengers. These types of cars, although fun to drive and also may draw the attention of the opposite sex, but needless to say they are much more dangerous to drive and more prone to get into an accident.

Even though more dangerous and apt to get into an accident or cause bodily harm the convertible has always been a much loved vehicle, whether it be small or large. There is something about the feeling of freedom when you are racing down the freeway or a windy beach or mountain road that makes us all feel years younger and much more invincible than if we were driving a family style car. Of course, in life we do have to pay for the feeling of the wind blowing through your hair making your feel years younger for a short time. Sometimes the cost may be too high not only in dollars but in lives and property damage.

Since the convertible is the most easily damaged of any other vehicle due to is “rag” top which is no support at all if you happen to be in an accident where your vehicle takes a roll or two, you have to make the choice as to what is more important to you and your family. This fact alone can make your insurance premiums sky high and the insurance company has to put out much more for bodily injury and damage to your vehicle when you are in any type of accident in a convertible.

It is possible to keep your insurance premiums down if you are smart and know that you can compare all insurance companies and their ratings just by clicking on the internet and checking out all your options by getting an online insurance quote comparison.

You will probably always be able to save some money on your auto policy by choosing one with high deductibles; thereby making your premiums lower. Also, if you choose to pay your premiums on a six month contract or a yearly contract versus month to month, you will be amazed at the amount of money you can save. Another way to decrease your auto insurance premiums is to reduce the miles you drive per month. Maybe you only drive your convertible in the summer time; this can also save you a large amount of money on your premiums. So, as you can see you can still have the fun of a convertible and find savings on your premiums in areas you may not have thought of before.

Bus/transit Safety Under Microscope as Accident-induced Injuries Increase

The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) estimates that hundreds of millions of dollars are being spent on bus and public transit accidents each year.

Several million individuals will board public transportation for a number of reasons this year. However, as public transportation becomes a more popular mode of travel, more individuals become at risk for being involved in a bus accident and developing bus or transit accident-induced injuries.

Additionally, the 2004 SSO Annual Report from the FTA also found that while ridership had increased significantly in a five-year period, fatalities were the highest they had been in a six-year period and were reaching 57 percent in 2004 alone.

Bus Accidents

There are a number of reasons and factors that can contribute to a bus or transit accident. The National Center for Transit Research (NCTR) and the Center for Urban Transportation Research (CUTR) at the University of South Florida recently conducted a study on how to improve and analyze bus safety. The researchers found that the following are several reasons for bus crashes:

* location of stop

* roadway surface type

* weather conditions

* traffic conditions

* operator status (as in a regular operator, mini-run, extra board, supervisor, etc.)

* transit vehicle movement prior to and during the time of accident

* vehicle defects at time of accident as well as last preventive maintenance

* movements of other vehicles during or prior to collision

* evasive action taken by driver

* passenger movement during or prior to accident

* pedestrian or cyclist movement prior to and during accident

* observed conditions of other driver/pedestrian/cyclist/passengers at time of accident

* additional contributory factors

Because of the extensive list of potential contributory factors that can be involved in a bus collision, it is important that steps are taken to decrease any incident that may occur. There are additional reasons that a bus accident can occur, even inadequate roadway or highway signs can lead to fatal accidents.

For example, a bus accident that killed five student athletes in March 2007 occurred because of poor roadway signage. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has since recommended that highway signage be improved by becoming clearer and more consistent. However, it seems that this is only one step being taken, and much more is likely needed immediately to protect pedestrians, other drivers and bus/transit passengers.

Improving Bus Safety

Currently, not all states require their transit systems to report and produce any type of system safety program plans. While the NCTR is working with several states to develop more significant bus accident data and tracking research, not much is being done to implement more significant safety measures that affect current passengers and vehicular drivers.

Although the FTA accompanied by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) are devising a plan that will implement improved technology likely to decrease accidents. The plan is known as the National Intelligent Vehicle Initiative (IVI). After an IVI system was implemented into Pittsburgh,the group reported an 80 percent reduction in claims.

Since the development of the IVI transportation plan, researchers from the group have reported that:

*42 state and local transit initiatives were on the ballots in November 2002

* More than 120 transportation corridors are seeking funding for the IVI plan

* Lane assistance technology (part of the IVI

transportation plan) may reduce the cost of an automated guideway transit (AGT) – a grade separated transit system running on wheels being guided (similar to a lightrail system)by up to 20 percent. An AGT commonly costs approximately $100 million.

Although the nationwide IVI plan is becoming more commonplace, there are an array of bus transit technologies being researched to decrease accidents, fatalities and injuries for bus accident victims.

For now, individuals can use the following steps and procedures to decrease a passengers risk for becoming injured because of a bus accident or bus collision:

* do not stand on a moving bus without holding on to proper safety bars or straps

* sit up straight on the bus

* do not engage in any activities that might distract

a bus driver

* avoid hanging items or limbs out of windows

* keep voices low and avoid loud, distracting conversations

* teach children to behave properly while on the bus and do not let them throw, run or partake in any horseplay

Additionally, individuals should avoid driving in bus lanes or designated bus stops as well as driving courteously but defensively on the road. If an individual is standing or walking near a bus stop or bus lane, remaining as far away from the designated bus area is advised.

Seeking Help When Involved in Bus Accident

Individuals who have been involved with a bus collision, may feel lost and alone. However, seeking medical attention and legal consultation can offer assistance in returning to normalcy in one’s life. Contacting a knowledgeable bus accident lawyer may offer insight into overcoming a bus collision. Many times, law firms provide free legal consultation in order to ease the distress of developing a lawsuit after a traumatic ordeal.
