What are my fines/sentence for being charged with theft under $5000?

I’m 18 and live near Toronto, Ontario, and work as a cashier. Just today I was called to the back of my store because they aught me stealing about $1500 in a period of a month. I cooperated, didn’t bother bs-ing anything and was interviewed by a police officer. They told me I was to attend a printing date, which is about 2 weeks and my court date, which is in mid-June. I’m seriously dumb, I know, I don’t need it to be bashed in my head even further.
He told me that as long as I promise to attend both, I won’t be arrested, just suspended for the rest of the day until further notice.
I was asked if I wanted to call a lawyer twice, and unsure if I should. After researching a bit, I think I should have some sort of aid.
i’m definitely expecting jail time. I told them i’d give them back all the money. I’m assuming there will be another fine on top of that.
This is my first criminal offence.

thanks~

You need a lawyer. Stealing from an employer is viewed as a more serious type of theft than shoplifting (for example), so chances of getting a diversion are slim, although a good attorney may be able to work something out or at least advise you of what you are looking at in the way of jail/fines.

If you don’t go to diversion, potential Penalty:

i) If the Crown proceeds by way of Indictment, the maximum jail sentence allowed is 2 years if the value is under $5000.

ii) If the Crown proceeds by way of a summary conviction, the maximum jail sentence is 6 months if the value is under $5000.

Note that those are maximum sentences.
